Disadvantages of IS

In as much as people use Information Systems for different reasons, they choose to use an Information system that they feel will be suitable for them and will be sufficient to compensate the loss they occurred to get it and will receive much benefit from it. Even though that’s the case Information system come with some disadvantages as well. This disadvantage affects many areas but for my report I will focus on three major areas which are business, society/community and an individual user if it’s a personal Information system.
BUSINESS
Some of the disadvantages the business comes across when they are using Information systems are:

Change business structure: Business using Information have to go into a process where some of the business way of doing things have to change, these may affect the staff as they were already used to how things are done in the business.
Cost: It is really costly for the business using an information system since Information systems are always updated now and then, so upgrading and putting new features in an information system may be expensive.
Information safety: Even the Information systems in the business keep the information of the business, information is not 100% protected since there are hackers who can hack into the systems  and view or steal the company’s information.
Information error: defective information systems can deliver the wrong information to other systems, which could create further problems for the company and its customers

SOCIETY
Some disadvantages you will recognise in the society are:

Inequality – In many societies a person is valued by the possessions he/she has. Wealthy people and Information system users are treated with more respect and are loved by many than average and people without Information systems. This makes a gap and divisions in our societies.
Unemployment: The unemployment rate has increased in many of societies due to businesses retrenching workers and used Information systems as substitutes.
INDIVIDUAL
Some disadvantages of personal Information systems are:

They get outdated faster:  A Personal IS that cost R1000 today will most likely be R600 next year. The reason is because their value decreases faster since every year new Information systems are introduced.
Expensive: Personal Information systems are expensive, not everyone can be able to afford them except if they are outdated. But this has an effect since using an out-dated Personal information system is not satisfactory since we want new things and faster things that will make things easier for us.
Breakdown:  Systems break down, interrupting smooth operations and causing customer dissatisfaction
